Pre-Procedure Instructions

  • Hydration: You are recommended to drink plenty of water the day before your procedure to stay well-hydrated.
  • Clothing: You should wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of your procedure. You may be provided with a gown to wear during the treatment.
  • Eating and Drinking: You are recommended to eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment. You should avoid consuming large meals or drinking caffeine on the day of the procedure.
  • Transportation: You should arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you may receive sedation or experience discomfort that could impair your ability to drive safely.

During the Procedure

  • What to Expect: Varithena is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. During the procedure, your healthcare provider will inject Varithena foam into the malfunctioning veins under ultrasound guidance. The foam displaces the blood within the vein and causes it to collapse, rerouting blood to healthier veins. The procedure typically takes less than an hour.
  • Comfort Measures: Local anesthesia is often used to minimize discomfort. You may feel pressure or a mild burning sensation during the injection, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.

Post-Procedure Care

  • Activity: You are recommended to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few days after the procedure. Gentle walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
  • Compression: You will likely need to wear compression stockings for a specified period to support vein closure and healing. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions regarding the duration and type of compression required.
  • Follow-Up: You should attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so your healthcare provider can monitor your recovery and the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Symptom Management: It's normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the treated area. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage these symptoms, but you are recommended to consult your healthcare provider if you have severe pain or signs of infection.
