Case Study: Successful Stenting in May-Thurner Syndrome

  • Patient Profile:

    Age: 28-year-old athletic female

  • Chief Complaint: Diffuse left leg swelling and tenderness
  • Diagnostic Findings:

Lower extremity venous ultrasound revealed thrombotic occlusion of the left common femoral vein, extending into the iliac veins. Incompressible, echogenic material was present. A subsequent CT angiogram revealed a significant compression of the left common iliac vein between the overriding right common iliac artery, indicating May-Thurner Syndrome.

  • Endovascular Intervention:

To address the venous obstruction and alleviate symptoms, the patient underwent a percutaneous angioplasty with stent placement in the left common iliac vein.

  • Positive Outcome:

The endovascular intervention was a resounding success, resulting in improved venous outflow and rapid relief of symptoms. The patient reported resolution of leg swelling and pain, with no evidence of recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at the three-month follow-up.
